Taxonomy
Cathartornis was named by Miller (1910). It is not extant. Its type is Cathartornis gracilis.

It was assigned to Vulturidae by Hay (1930); to Cathartidae by Lambrecht (1933); and to Teratornithidae by Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956), Wetmore (1960), Carroll (1988) and Olson and Alvarenga (2002).
