Taxonomy
Vulturidae was named by Illiger (1811). It is extant. Its type is Vultur.

It was synonymized subjectively with Cathartidae by Amadon (1977) and Livezey and Zusi (2007); it was reranked as the subfamily Vulturinae by Agnolín et al. (2017).

It was assigned to Vulturoidae by Hay (1930); to Falconiformes by Guthrie (1992) and Olson and Rasmussen (2001); to Ciconiiformes by Emslie (1988), Emslie (1988), Carroll (1988), Emslie (1992) and Stucchi and Emslie (2005); and to Cathartidae by Agnolín et al. (2017).
