Taxonomy
Cyphornis was named by Cope (1895). Its type is Cyphornis magnus. It is the type genus of Cyphornithidae.
It was assigned to Steganopodes by Cope (1895); to Pelecanidae by Hay (1902); to Cyphornithidae by Wemore (1928), Hay (1930), Lambrecht (1933), Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956) and Wetmore (1960); and to Pelagornithidae by Carroll (1988) and Cenizo et al. (2015).
