Colus sekiuensis was named by Kiel and Goedert (2007). Its type specimen is UWBM 97933, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Murdock Creek, which is in a Rupelian deep-water siltstone in the Pysht Formation of Washington.
