Gyroporella bellerophontis was named by Rothpletz (1894). It is the type species of Gymnocodium.

It was recombined as Macroporella bellerophontis by Pia (1912); it was recombined as Gymnocodium bellerophontis by Ogilvie Gordon (1927).
