Taxonomy
Tachyglossus was named by Illiger (1811). It is extant. Its type is Myrmecophaga aculeatus.

It was reranked as Echidna (Tachyglossus) by Ramsay (1877).

It was assigned to Echidna by Ramsay (1877); and to Tachyglossidae by Carroll (1988), Griffiths et al. (1991), Rich et al. (2005) and Rowe et al. (2008).
