Taxonomy

Essonodon was named by Simpson (1927). Its type is Essonodon browni.

It was assigned to Ptilodontidae by Simpson (1927), Simpson (1929), Hay (1930) and Sloan and Van Valen (1965); to Multituberculata by Clemens and Kielan-Jaworowska (1979); to Eucosmodontidae by McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Cimolomyidae by Kielan-Jaworowska and Hurum (2001) and Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (2004).
