Allacodon was named by Marsh (1889). Its type is Allacodon lentus.

It was assigned to Allodontidae by Marsh (1889); to Bolodontidae by Hay (1902); to Ptilodontidae by Hay (1930); and to Cimolomyidae by Marsh (1889) and McKenna and Bell (1997).
