Spalacotheroides was named by Patterson (1955). Its type is Spalacotheroides bridwelli.
It was considered a nomen dubium by Cifelli et al. (2000).
It was assigned to Spalacotheriida by Prothero (1981); to Spalacotheriidae by Patterson (1955), Patterson (1956), Cassiliano and Clemens (1979), McKenna and Bell (1997) and Li and Luo (2006); and to Spalacolestinae by Cifelli and Madsen (1999), Averianov (2002), Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (2004) and Han and Meng (2016).
It was considered a nomen dubium by Cifelli et al. (2000).
