Taxonomy

Amphitheriidae was named by Owen (1846). It was considered monophyletic by Lopatin and Averianov (2007).

It was assigned to Polyprotodontia by Cope (1889); to Marsupialia by Lydekker (1894); to Trituberculata by Gadow (1898); to Polyprotodontia by Flower and Lydekker (1891) and Hay (1902); to Pantotheria by Simpson (1928) and Simpson (1929); to Eupantotheria by Kraus (1979) and Carroll (1988); to Cladotheria by Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (2004); and to Amphitheria by Lopatin and Averianov (2007).
