Araeodon was named by Simpson (1937). It is not extant. Its type is Araeodon intermissus.
It was assigned to Paurodontidae by Kraus (1979), Prothero (1981), McKenna and Bell (1997), Engelmann and Callison (1998) and Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (2004).
