Malthacolestes was named by Simpson (1927). Its type is Malthacolestes osborni.

It was synonymized subjectively with Melanodon by Prothero (1981).

It was assigned to Dryolestidae by Simpson (1927), Simpson (1929), Hay (1930), Kraus (1979) and McKenna and Bell (1997).
