Sparassocynus was named by Mercerat (1898). It is not extant. Its type is Sparassocynus bahiai.

It was assigned to Sparassocyninae by Reig (1958); to Didelphidae by Carroll (1988); and to Sparassocynini by Beck and Taglioretti (2020).
