Boreodon was named by Lambe (1902). Its type is Boreodon matutinus.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Simpson (1929); it was considered a nomen dubium by Clemens (1979), Fox (1981), Archibald (1982) and Montellano (1992).

It was assigned to Plagiaulacidae by Lambe (1902); to Allotheria by Hay (1930); and to Stagodontidae by McKenna and Bell (1997).
