Taxonomy
Stylocynus was named by Mercerat (1917). It is not extant. Its type is Stylocynus paranensis.

It was assigned to Proborhyaeninae by Marshall (1979); to Borhyaenidae by McKenna and Bell (1997); to Sparassodonta by Forasiepi (2009); and to Sparassodonta by Goin et al. (2013).
