Phalanger was named by Storr (1780). It is extant. It is the type genus of Phalangerinae, Phalangerini.
It was assigned to Phalangerinae by Pocock (1921); to Phalangerini by Flannery et al. (1987); and to Phalangeridae by Springer et al. (1994) and McKenna and Bell (1997).
