Aepyprymnus was named by Garrod (1875). It is extant. Its type is Bettongia rufescens.
It was assigned to Bettongini by Flannery and Archer (1987); to Macropodidae by Springer et al. (1994) and McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Potoroinae by Burk et al. (1998).
