Protemnodon was named by Owen (1874). It is not extant.

It was assigned to Macropodidae by Marshall (1974) and McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Macropodinae by Flannery and Archer (1984), Flannery et al. (1989) and Dawson et al. (1999).
