Taxonomy
Palaeoryctes was named by Matthew (1913). It is not extant. Its type is Palaeoryctes puercensis. It is the type genus of Palaeoryctidae.

It was assigned to Tenrecidae by Hay (1930); to Palaeoryctinae by Van Valen (1967) and Gheerbrant (1992); and to Palaeoryctidae by Matthew (1913), Carroll (1988), Lopatin (2006) and Silcox et al. (2010).
