Pugnellus manubriatus was named by Gabb (1864). Its type specimen is ANSP 4278, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Pugnellus (Gymnarus) manubriatus by Gabb (1869) and Stewart (1927); it was recombined as Gymnarus manubriatus by Popenoe (1983).
