Paleotomus was named by Van Valen (1967).

It was assigned to Didelphodontinae by Van Valen (1967); to Pantolestidae by Gingerich (1980); to Eutheria by Scott et al. (2002); and to Cimolestidae by McKenna and Bell (1997) and Secord (2008).

Synonyms

Niphredil was named by Van Valen (1978).

It was synonymized subjectively with Paleotomus by Krause and Gingerich (1983); it was synonymized subjectively with Palaeosinopa by Lopatin (2006).

It was assigned to Pantolestidae by Van Valen (1978), Gingerich (1980) and McKenna and Bell (1997).
