Protentomodon was named by Simpson (1928). It is not extant. Its type is Protentomodon ursirivalis.
It was assigned to Nyctitheriidae by Hay (1930); to Pentacodontidae by Van Valen (1967); and to Cimolestidae by Simpson (1928) and McKenna and Bell (1997).
