Turbonilla aspera was named by Gabb (1861).

It was recombined as Bittium asperum by Gabb (1866), Carpenter (1866), Ashley (1895) and Stewart (1927); it was recombined as Bittium (Lirobittium) asperum by Bartsch (1911); it was recombined as Lirobittium asperum by Hendy (2021).
