Stauronema was named by Sollas (1877) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-u K Ceno-m]. It is not extant. Its type is Stauronema carteri. It is the type genus of Stauronematinae.
It was assigned to Lychniscosa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Stauronematinae by Finks et al. (2004).
