Taxonomy

Leptictis was named by Leidy (1868) [type species is L. haydeni (not L. dakotensis) by monotypy (Meehan and Martin 2010)]. It is not extant. Its type is Leptictis haydeni. It is the type genus of Leptictidae, Leptictinae.

It was assigned to Leptictinae by Hay (1930), Van Valen (1967) and Meehan and Martin (2010); and to Leptictidae by Leidy (1868), Hay (1902), Novacek (1976), McKenna and Bell (1997), Korth (2022) and Korth et al. (2022).

Synonyms

Ictidops was named by Winge (1917) [unneeded emendation, and in any case preoccupied by a Karoo reptile of Broom].

It was synonymized subjectively with Ictops by Matthew (1918); it was synonymized subjectively with Leptictis by Van Valen (1967).
Ictops was named by Leidy (1868).

It was synonymized subjectively with Leptictis by Van Valen (1967), Lillegraven (1969), Novacek (1976), Novacek (1977), Kellner and McKenna (1996), Rose (1999) and Meehan and Martin (2010).

It was assigned to Leptictinae by Hay (1930); and to Leptictidae by Hay (1902) and Johnson (1966).
Ictops major was named by Douglass (1905).

It was considered a nomen dubium by Novacek (1976).
Isacis was named by Cope (1873). Its type is Isacis caniculus.

It was replaced with Mesodectes by Hay (1902); it was synonymized subjectively with Leptictis by Van Valen (1967).

It was assigned to Mammalia by Cope (1873).
Isacis caniculus was named by Cope (1873). It is the type species of Isacis, Mesodectes.

It was recombined as Mesodectes caniculus by Cope (1875), Hay (1902), Hay (1930) and Scott and Jepsen (1936); it was considered a nomen dubium by Novacek (1976).
Nanohyus was named by Leidy (1869).

It was synonymized subjectively with Ictops by Hay (1930) and Scott and Jepsen (1936); it was synonymized subjectively with Leptictis by Van Valen (1967) and Novacek (1976).

It was assigned to Hyotheriinae by Hay (1902).
