Taxonomy
Leptictis was named by Leidy (1868) [type species is L. haydeni (not L. dakotensis) by monotypy (Meehan and Martin 2010)]. It is not extant. Its type is Leptictis haydeni.

It was assigned to Leptictinae by Van Valen (1967) and Meehan and Martin (2010); and to Leptictidae by Leidy (1868), Hay (1902), Novacek (1976), McKenna and Bell (1997), Korth (2022) and Korth et al. (2022).
