Palaeictops was named by Matthew (1899). It is not extant. Its type is Stypolophus bicuspis.
It was synonymized subjectively with Diacodon by Matthew (1918) and Matthew (1937).
It was assigned to Leptictidae by Matthew (1899), Hay (1902), Gazin (1956), Novacek (1977), McKenna and Bell (1997) and Hooker (2013); and to Leptictinae by Van Valen (1967) and Velazco and Novacek (2016).
