Taxonomy
Phenacolemur was named by Matthew (1915). It is not extant. Its type is Phenacolemur praecox. It is the type genus of Phenacolemurinae, Phenacolemurini.
It was assigned to Plesiadapidae by Matthew (1917) and Hay (1930); to Primates by Simpson (1936) and Simpson (1940); to Phenacolemurinae by Gunnell (1989); to Phenacolemurini by Robinson and Ivy (1994); and to Paromomyidae by Matthew (1915), Robinson (1968), McKenna and Bell (1997) and Rose et al. (2012).
It was assigned to Plesiadapidae by Matthew (1917) and Hay (1930); to Primates by Simpson (1936) and Simpson (1940); to Phenacolemurinae by Gunnell (1989); to Phenacolemurini by Robinson and Ivy (1994); and to Paromomyidae by Matthew (1915), Robinson (1968), McKenna and Bell (1997) and Rose et al.
