Erinaceomorpha was named by Gregory (1910). It is extant.

It was reranked as the unranked clade Erinaceomorpha by Gregory (1910), Smith et al. (2002), Scott (2006) and Silcox et al. (2010); it was reranked as the suborder Erinaceomorpha by McKenna (1975); it was considered an invalid subgroup of Eulipotyphla by Douady et al. (2002); it was reranked as the order Erinaceomorpha by Wilson and Reeder (2005).

It was assigned to Lipotyphla by Gregory (1910); to Insectivora by McKenna (1975); to Insectivora by Novacek et al. (1985); to Mammalia by Wilson and Reeder (2005); to Lipotyphla by Hooker (1986), Smith et al. (2002), Lopatin (2006), Scott (2006) and Dunn and Rasmussen (2009); and to Eulipotyphla by Silcox et al. (2010) and Rose et al. (2012).
