Leipsanolestes was named by Simpson (1928). It is not extant. Its type is Leipsanolestes siegfriedti.
It was synonymized subjectively with Leptacodon by Simpson (1929), Simpson (1935), Simpson (1945) and Gazin (1949); it was synonymized subjectively with Entomolestes by McKenna (1960), Van Valen (1967) and Delson (1971); it was synonymized subjectively with Talpavus by Robinson (1968).
It was assigned to Adapisoricidae by Hay (1930); to Erinaceomorpha by Simpson (1928), Krishtalka (1976), Bown and Schankler (1982) and McKenna and Bell (1997); to Erinaceidae by Novacek et al. (1985) and Scott (2006); and to Erinaceoidea by Gunnell et al. (2008).
