Tupaiodon was named by Matthew and Granger (1924). Its type is Tupaiodon morrisi.
It was assigned to Creotarsinae by Van Valen (1967); to Erinaceomorpha by Carroll (1988); to Erinaceidae by Wang and Wang (1991); to Changlelestidae by Tong and Wang (1993); and to Tupaiodontinae by Storch and Dashzeveg (1997) and Lopatin (2003).
