Gooloogongia loomesi
Taxonomy
Gooloogongia loomesi was named by Johanson and Ahlberg (1998) [Recognizable as a rhizodont by the possession of posteriorly pointed postparietals, short dorsal blade of the cleithrum, long basal lepidotrichial segments in the pectoral fin, doubled dorsal lateral line canal, supratemporal–extratemporal contact, and a very short anterior margin of the median extrascapular. However, it lacks several derived features of other rhizodonts (premaxillary fang, posterior depressed lamina of cleithrum, long basal lepidotrichial segments in posterior fins), indicating that it represents the sister group of previously known Rhizodontida. The body length is roughly 80 cm. The very slender recumbent mandibular fangs seem to be autapomorphic.
]. Its type specimen is AMF 96860A and B, a partial skull (a skull and partial lower jaw, incomplete cleithrum, incomplete pectoral fin and body scales, exposed in dorsal view), and it is a mold. Its type locality is Canowindra, which is in a Famennian terrestrial horizon in the Mandagery Sandstone Formation of Australia.
