Parascalops was named by True (1894). It is extant. Its type is Scalopus breweri.

It was assigned to Urotrichini by Van Valen (1967); and to Talpidae by True (1894), Hay (1930), Yates and Schmidly (1975), Kurten and Anderson (1980) and Carroll (1988).
