Cypellospongia was named by Rigby and Gosney (1983) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Olen-u Sepkoski's reference number: 228]. Its type is Cypellospongia fimbriartis.

It was assigned to Euplectellidae by Rigby and Gosney (1983); to Lyssacinosida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Taegerinae by Finks et al. (2004).
