Limnoecus was named by Stirton (1930). It is not extant. Its type is Limnoecus tricuspis.

It was assigned to Soricidae by Stirton (1930) and Carroll (1988); and to Limnoecinae by Van Valen (1967) and Gunnell et al. (2008).
