Petenyia was named by Kormos (1934). It is not extant.

It was assigned to Soricidae by Kormos (1934), Kurten (1968) and McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Soricini by Van Valen (1967), Bachmayer and Wilson (1970) and Gunnell et al. (2008).
