Cyclopteris hibernica was named by Forbes (1854). It is not extant. It is the type species of Archaeopteris, Palaeopteris.

It was recombined as Palaeopteris hibernica by Schimper (1869); it was recombined as Archaeopteris hibernica by Dawson (1871).
