Megalesthonyx was named by Rose (1971). It is not extant. Its type is Megalesthonyx hopsoni.

It was assigned to Trogosinae by Lucas and Schoch (1998); to Yuesthonychidae by Tong et al. (2003); to Tillodontia by Wang and Jin (2004); and to Esthonychidae by Rose (1971), Carroll (1988) and Miyata (2007).
