Basalina was named by Dehm and Oettingen-Spielberg (1958). Its type is Basalina basalensis.
It was assigned to Stylinodontinae by Dehm and Oettingen-Spielberg (1958); and to Tillodontia by Lucas and Schoch (1981) and Carroll (1988).
