Prodinoceras was named by Matthew et al. (1929). Its type is Prodinoceras martyr.
It was assigned to Uintatheriidae by Matthew et al. (1929); to Bathyopsinae by Wheeler (1961); and to Prodinoceratidae by Matthew et al. (1929), Schoch and Lucas (1985) and Lucas and Schoch (1998).
