Gobiatherium was named by Osborn and Granger (1932). Its type is Gobiatherium mirificum. It was considered monophyletic by Osborn and Granger (1932).
It was assigned to Uintatheriidae by Osborn and Granger (1932) and Lucas and Schoch (1998); and to Gobiatheriinae by Wheeler (1961), Schoch and Lucas (1985) and Lucas (2001).
