Pileospongia was named by Rigby et al. (1979) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-u C Serp-l Sepkoski's reference number: 220]. It is not extant. Its type is Pileospongia lopados.
It was assigned to Lyssacinosida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pileospongiidae by Finks et al. (2004).
