Wortmania was named by Hay (1899). Its type is Hemiganus otariidens.

It was assigned to Stylinodontidae by Rook and Hunter (2011) and Williamson and Brusatte (2013); and to Stylinodontidae by Hay (1899), Hay (1902), Hay (1930), Lucas et al. (1998), Lucas et al. (1998) and Clemens (2013).

It was replaced with Robertschochia by Lucas (2011); it was synonymized subjectively with Wortmania by Williamson and Brusatte (2013).

It was assigned to Taeniodonta by Lucas and Williamson (1993); to Conoryctidae by Lucas et al. (1998); and to Stylinodontidae by Rook and Hunter (2011).
Hemiganus was named by Cope (1882). Its type is Wortmania otariidens.

It was synonymized subjectively with Psittacotherium by Wortman (1897), Hay (1902), Matthew (1937), Schoch (1981) and Schoch (1986); it was replaced with Wortmania by Hay (1899), Hay (1930) and Lucas et al. (1998).
