Ectoganus was named by Cope (1874). It is not extant. Its type is Ectoganus gliriformis.

It was assigned to Stylinodontidae by Cope (1874), Hay (1902), Hay (1930), Lucas et al. (1998), Lucas et al. (1998) and Rose et al. (2012); and to Stylinodontidae by Rook and Hunter (2011) and Williamson and Brusatte (2013).
