Megachiroptera was named by Dobson (1875). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Frugivora by Gregory (1910).

It was assigned to Chiropteri by Jaekel (1911); and to Chiroptera by Flower (1883), Flower and Lydekker (1891), McKenna (1975), Kurten and Anderson (1980) and Carroll (1988).
