Necrolemur was named by Filhol (1873). It is not extant. Its type is Necrolemur antiquus.
It was assigned to Lemuridae by Schlosser (1877); to Anaptomorphinae by Wortman (1904); to Necrolemurinae by Simpson (1940); to Omomyidae by McKenna and Bell (1997); to Microchoeridae by Gunnell and Rose (2002); and to Microchoerinae by Hooker (1986) and Minwer-Barakat et al. (2015).
