Proetus obconicus was named by Lindstrom (1885).
It was recombined as Proetus (Coniproetus) obconicus by Alberti (1969); it was recombined as Proetus (Lacunoporaspis) obconicus by Owens (1973); it was recombined as Plesiowensus obconicus by Lieberman (1994).
