Carphites was named by Finks (1960) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-l P Guad-l Sepkoski's reference number: 203]. Its type is Carphites plectus.

It was assigned to Reticulosa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Docodermatidae by Finks et al. (2004).
