Taxonomy
Atelidae was named by Gray (1825) [includes howler monkeys and spider monkeys]. It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Opazo et al. (2006).

It was assigned to Simiiformes by Wilson and Reeder (2005); and to Platyrrhini by Setoguchi and Rosenberger (1987), Carroll (1988), Hartwig and Cartelle (1996), MacPhee and Horovitz (2002) and Opazo et al. (2006).
