Psilomydae was named by Macquart (1835). It is extant.

It was corrected as Psilidae by Carpenter (1992), Wiegmann et al. (2011) and Lonsdale (2020).

It was assigned to Brachycera by Carpenter (1992); to Schizophora by Wiegmann et al. (2011); and to Diopsoidea by Lonsdale (2020).
